DON’T OVERTUNE YOUR VOCALS!! w/ Erik Ron – URM Enhanced Fast Track preview

In this clip from his Vocal Production Fast Track, Erik Ron shows how he tunes vocals with Auto-tune using Jonny Craig’s vocal tracks from “I’d Rather See Your Star Explode” by Slaves. The core tenant of Erik’s approach is to never, ever overtune the vocal– to smooth out the imperfections while preserving the natural character and emotion that’s key to drawing in the listener.

Mixing massive Godsmack drums w/ Erik Ron

The foundation of the mix

A massive, slamming kick drum is the backbone of any rock mix– and it doesn’t get much more slamming than the one in “Bulletproof” by Godsmack. And best of all? We were there while Erik Ron mixed in his Nail The Mix session, and here’s your chance to see what happened…

MIXING MASSIVE ROCK DRUMS w/ Erik Ron and Godsmack “Bulletproof”

Erik Ron shows how to mix a rock kick and snare drum using the raw multi-tracks for “Bulletproof” by Godsmack.

Erik covers levels, EQ with the stock Pro Tools EQ plugin, using the McDSP compressor, reverb, blending in samples, and working in the rooms– yes, there’s much more to the drum sound than this (which you can see in the full session), but it all starts here.

There’s a first time for everything

In particular, take note of what he says at the beginning about why he DOESN’T do doubles for everything. Remember that the point of all this is to make great music that moves people, and there are no rules other than “if it sounds good, it is good,” and slavishly following a signal chain isn’t always a recipe for success.

A few things to note:

  • As you’d expect, beautiful vocals by Jonny Craig
