In this clip from his Nail The Mix session, Sean O’Keefe shows how he mixed the guitars in Fall Out Boy’s “Lake Effect Kid.”

What’s notable is that although the song is focused on the vocals, and at first glance is a pretty straightforward pop punk song, there’s actually a lot of subtly and nuance in the guitars (courtesy of Joe Trohman and Patrick Stump)– and the trick is to bring those out without getting in the way of the vocals.

Sean’s years of experience show in that he doesn’t make it harder than it needs to be, and doesn’t let himself fall prey to mixing dogma: he relies on the Waves CLA Vocals plugin for a lot of the processing, along with Soothe, Waves L1, and the Waves SSL E Channel strip.

The NTM crew traveled to Ribe, Denmark for Jacob Hansen’s Nail The Mix with “365” by Amaranthe and “Iron Strengthens Iron” by Dyscarnate, and here’s what happened: – We hung out with Chris Adler (Lamb Of God) and the Dyscarnate guys – We got a tour of Jacob’s beautiful studio – We had some amazingly good coffee – And as always when we travel, we went to a URM meetup Thanks to Jacob, Chris, the Dyscarnate guys and everybody who came to the meetup!
