When he doesn’t have access to his analog gear, Joel Wanasek uses a few basic plugins in his mastering chain; Waves SSL Comp, Waves Linear MB, Slate FG-X, Slate VTM, and the stock Cubase EQ. These are plugins that are not especially expensive and are actually pretty commonplace.
The trick is that Joel knows exactly what he’s doing and what he’s going for.
