Great low end is often times the differentiator between an amateur or pro sounding track. Weak or flubby low end is a dead giveaway that you’re not listening to the cream of the crop… so not only is it a crucial skill to conquer, it’s also one of the hardest to get right!

Thankfully there’s a few tools you can learn which will make your life easier. One of those is multi band compression.

It’s useful because you can compress different frequency ranges differently. For instance, imagine you have an issue in the low end, but the rest of the mix is fine. Fixing a specific problem area between 30-150hz with a broadband compressor will be very tricky because whatever settings you use will be applied to the entire frequency spectrum. With a multi band compressor this is no longer a problem.

You can target exactly what you need to fix, and leave the rest alone!

This clip is taken from an 7+ hour long Nail the Mix stream where Joey Sturgis mixed “Restart” by Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! while answering questions from the audience!
