Kurt Ballou is the brains behind Boston, MA’s Godcity Studios. One of the most prolific producers in metal/hardcore/punk, he’s worked with a laundry list of bands including everyone from Champion and Have Heart to Kvelertak, Cave In and Nails. He also plays guitar in Converge, one of the most influential hardcore bands of the past two decades (currently on their eighth album).
In May of 2015 we held our first annual Guitar Month where we spoke to guitarists that were also producers and picked their brains on everything from string care, to multiple microphone cabinet scenarios and everything in between.
For me (Eyal) this episode was not only cool but also a personal milestone since I grew up listening to Kurt’s work. And Kurt didn’t disappoint, he was incredibly generous with the sharing of information.
I know there are hordes of people dying to know how he gets such a nasty, raw, huge, and powerful signature sound.
Does that sound like you? If it does, this episode is for YOU!
Just a few of the many things we covered:
- In studio etiquete
- Surgical EQ tips
- Balancing budget vs time
- The difference between panning space and reverb space
- Cool uses for saturation plug ins
- Using notches instead of low pass filters
- The science of sound
- Of course pedals and cab!
- Smoothing out harsh upper mids
